When did it start?

​The concept of taking the Eiken on a computer was tested in various pilot programs starting around 2018, mostly to adapt to changes in university entrance exams. However, the streamlined, one-day format that students use today officially launched in April 2021. Since then, it has exploded in popularity, giving busy students and professionals a highly flexible alternative to the traditional paper-and-pencil route.

What levels are available?

Before diving into the pros and cons, it is important to know that the S-CBT is designed specifically for the middle-to-upper tiers. It is available for Grade 3, Grade Pre-2, Grade 2, and Grade Pre-1.
Beginner levels (Grades 5 and 4) and the absolute highest tier (Grade 1) still require the traditional paper testing format.

The Pros: Why People Love the S-CBT

There is a reason test centers book up so quickly. The S-CBT offers some massive advantages over the old-school format:

• One and Done: Instead of splitting the exam across two days weeks apart, the S-CBT tests all four skills (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) in a single session lasting about 2.5 to 3 hours.
  
• Ultimate Flexibility: Traditional Eiken happens just three times a year. The S-CBT is held almost every weekend (and on select weekdays), making it much easier to fit into your schedule.
  
• Multiple Attempts: You are allowed to take the S-CBT up to two times per official testing period. If you need to pass a specific grade quickly for university or a job, you get many more opportunities.
  
• Personal Audio: No more sitting in the back of a large classroom straining to hear a scratchy CD player. You get your own headset with adjustable volume for the Listening section.
  
• Keyboard Friendly: You can choose to handwrite your essay on a physical answer sheet, or you can type it directly on the computer. For fast typists, this is a game-changer that frees up precious time.
  
• No Live Interviewer: The Speaking section is recorded. You speak into a microphone in response to an avatar on the screen, which completely eliminates the anxiety of sitting in front of a live, judging examiner.
  

​The Cons: Things to Watch Out For

While it is a fantastic system, the digital format is not perfect for everyone. Here are a few realities to consider before you book:

• Screen Fatigue: Staring at a computer screen to read long English passages can tire your eyes out faster than paper. Additionally, while there is a digital highlighter tool, you cannot physically scribble notes or cross out answers like you can on a traditional test booklet.
  
• The "Noisy Room" Effect: Everyone in the computer lab takes the test simultaneously, meaning everyone starts the Speaking section at roughly the same time. Hearing the people sitting next to you talking to their screens can be distracting.
  
• Studying for Everything at Once: In the traditional format, you only have to worry about the Speaking interview if you pass the written test. With S-CBT, you must be 100% prepared for all four skills on the very same day. (Fortunately, studying all four skills simultaneously is exactly what we focus on at Freedom English School!)
  
• The Cost: Operating computer labs is expensive, so the S-CBT exam fee is generally a bit higher than taking the traditional test at a school or public venue.
  
• Strict Booking Policies: Because computer seating is highly limited, centers fill up fast. Once you book, the cancellation and rescheduling policies are very strict.
  

​Is the Certificate the Same?

Yes! A common worry is that schools or employers might think an S-CBT certificate is somehow "lesser" than a traditional Eiken pass. That is completely false. The difficulty, the scoring system (CSE), and the official qualification are mathematically and legally identical. Your certificate will look exactly the same.

いつ始まったの？

大学入試の変化に対応するため、2018年頃からパソコンで英検を受験するシステムが様々な試験運用で試されてきました。しかし、現在受験生が利用している、1日で完結する合理的なフォーマットが正式にスタートしたのは2021年4月です。それ以来、従来の紙と鉛筆の試験に代わる非常に柔軟な選択肢として、忙しい学生や社会人の間で爆発的な人気を集めています。

​どの級が受験できるの？

メリットとデメリットについて詳しく見る前に、S-CBTが中〜上級向けに特別に設計されていることを知っておくことが重要です。受験可能な級は、3級、準2級、2級、準1級です。
初級レベル（5級および4級）や最高峰の級（1級）については、引き続き従来のペーパーテスト形式での受験が必要です。

メリット：S-CBTが人気な理由

テストセンターの予約がすぐに埋まってしまうのには理由があります。S-CBTには、従来の形式に比べて大きなメリットがあります。

• 1日で完結： 数週間空けて2日間に分けて受験するのではなく、S-CBTでは4技能すべて（リーディング、リスニング、ライティング、スピーキング）を約2.5〜3時間の1回のセッションで行います。
• 究極の柔軟性： 従来の英検は年3回しか実施されません。しかし、S-CBTはほぼ毎週末（および一部の平日）に実施されているため、スケジュールに合わせやすくなっています。
• 複数回の受験チャンス： S-CBTは公式の1検定期間につき最大2回まで受験可能です。大学受験や就職活動のために特定の級に早く合格したい場合、受験のチャンスが格段に増えます。
• 自分専用の音声： 広い教室の後ろの席で、音質の悪いCDプレイヤーの音を聞き取ろうと苦労する必要はもうありません。リスニングセッションでは、音量調節が可能な自分専用のヘッドセットを使用できます。
• キーボード入力が可能： エッセイは、物理的な解答用紙に手書きするか、パソコンで直接入力するかを選択できます。タイピングが早い人にとっては、貴重な時間を節約できる画期的な機能です。
• 対面面接なし： スピーキングテストは録音形式です。画面上のアバターに向かってマイクに話しかけるため、目の前で面接官に評価されるという緊張感を完全に排除できます。

​ デメリット：注意すべき点

素晴らしいシステムですが、このデジタルフォーマットがすべての人に完璧というわけではありません。予約する前に考慮すべきいくつかの現実的な点があります。

• 画面による目の疲れ： パソコンの画面で英語の長文を読むと、紙よりも早く目が疲れる可能性があります。また、デジタルハイライト機能はあるものの、従来のテスト冊子のように自由にメモを書き込んだり、答えにバツ印をつけたりすることはできません。
• 「周囲の音」による影響： コンピュータールームにいる全員が同時にテストを受けるため、全員がほぼ同じタイミングでスピーキングセッションを開始します。隣の人が画面に向かって話している声が聞こえるため、気が散ってしまうことがあります。
• 一度にすべての対策が必要： 従来の形式では、筆記試験に合格した場合にのみ、スピーキング（面接）の心配をすれば済みました。しかしS-CBTでは、テスト当日に4技能すべての準備を100%整えておく必要があります。（幸いなことに、4技能すべてを同時に学習することこそ、Freedom English Schoolが最も得意としていることです！）
• 費用： コンピュータールームの運営にはコストがかかるため、S-CBTの受験料は、学校や公開会場での従来型テストよりも一般的に少し高めに設定されています。
• 厳しい予約規定： コンピューターの座席数には限りがあるため、会場はすぐに満席になります。一度予約すると、キャンセルや日程変更の規定が非常に厳しくなっています。

​取得できる資格（合格証書）は同じ？

はい！よくある懸念として、「S-CBTの合格証明書は従来の英検合格よりも価値が低いと思われるのではないか」というものがありますが、それは全くの誤解です。難易度、採点システム（CSEスコア）、そして公式な資格としての価値は、数学的にも法的にも完全に同一です。合格証書も従来のものと全く同じ見た目になります。
